What to Look for in a Great Online Degree
Great online degrees are available like never before - and there seem to be as many schools to choose from as courses of study. That's why choosing an online educator is so very important. Wherever there is money and high Internet traffic, scammers are going to come along to part a fool from his money, as they say. So, taking the time to find a school with a great reputation has never been more important. It can seriously mean the difference between getting what you want out of life versus a great deal of disappointment. You have to look out for yourself.
Take a Closer Look
It may take a good deal of research to assess an online educator, but be sure that the school you are considering can boast the following:
- Accredited If a school doesn't have the proper accreditation, start looking elsewhere. Nothing else will matter as much. Spending your money on an education that no one will respect isn't worth a dime. And know that there are lots of schools to select from. However, if they do say they are accredited, don't take their word for it. Find out if it's a valid claim. Enter the school's name into a search engine with the phrase accreditation problems, or similar words. See what comes up. Beware of scammers. And beware of false credentials from fake organizations. Real sources of accreditation include The Council for Higher Education, and others. Check their standing with the Better Business Bureau as well. If you don't check them out, and enroll and go through the sacrifice of earning a great degree online but from an unaccredited school, potential employers will consider your credentials invalid regardless of how much knowledge you gained. Be aware of this as well: Listing invalid credentials on your resume is not just frowned on in some states, but actually illegal.
- Offers job placement With your degree in hand, you'll want help finding a job or maybe a better one commensurate with your new qualifications. And because so many schools offer guaranteed job placement to their grads, you should cross off your list schools without graduate placement programs. Simple as that. Why bother with those who don't? And one better, check their success rates with getting their graduates jobs.
- Affordable With so many schools to choose from and prospective employers in the high 80 percentile respecting online degrees, why choose one that will put you behind the eight-ball financially? Choose one that you can reasonably afford with financial aid and student loans, if necessary. Decide what you can afford for this next phase of your education, and stick to that number. If cost is a deciding criteria for you, over accreditation and placement programs, whatever you do, never go with a school that doesn't earn you a legitimate degree, no matter how affordable. And ask if the school offers either help with gaining financial aid, or assistance applying for it. Bear in mind too that some degrees can come with unexpected fees aside from tuition. Some might even expect you to come to their headquarters for final exams and other testing. Such requirements add to the cost of attending a school.
